Classy sprinter Kingdundee, whose dam is a half-sister to the dam of Wilgerbosdrift’s exciting young sire Hawwaam, made headlines when he won the G1 World Pool Cape Flying Championship (1000m) at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday.
In the process, he provided his trainer Dean Smith with the first G1 success of his career.
A four-year-old son of The United States, Kingdundee was given a fine, front running ride by Calvin Habib to land Saturday’s R1 500 000 sprint.
Habib quickly took his mount to the front, and Kingdundee duly went on to make all the running and score by three-parts of a length.
Bred and owned by Clive Murphy, Kingdundee, who was making it four wins in a row with his Cape Flying Championship victory, is yet to be defeated over 1000 metres.
The gelding has won eight of just 11 starts, with Kingdundee also victorious in the 2024 Listed Dahlia Plate.
A half-brother to this season’s G2 Western Cape Fillies Championship winner Princess Of Gaul, Kingdundee is out of the winning Duke Of Marmalade mare Miss Marmalade.
In turn, the latter is a half-sister to G3 Prix du Cap/Listed Off To Stud Stakes winner Halfway To Heaven, the dam of three G1 winners including Equus Champions Rainbow Bridge and Hawwaam.
