Wilgerbosdrift’s homebred champion Hawwaam came up with his first stakes winner on Saturday.
His three-year-old son Diogenes was a fitting winner of Saturday’s Listed WSB Hawwaam Stakes (2000m) at Turffontein.

Trained by Weichong Marwing, three-year-old Diogenes was backed down from 10-1 to 8-1 for Saturday’s Listed feature and he duly lived up to expectations.
Under a fine ride from Muzi Yeni, Diogenes tracked the front running Texas Missile for much of the running, before the son of Hawwaam hit the front with 200m left to run.
From there, Diogenes drew off to win convincingly by a length and a half.

Bred by Riethuiskraal Stud, the gelded son of Hawwaam has won three of nine starts and is on track to contest the G2 TAB SA Derby.

Owned by Mr Havenga, Diogenes is out of the Captain Al mare Captainofmysoul.
The 2026 Hawwaam Stakes winner was a R300 000 buy from the 2024 National Yearling Sale, before he was resold for R281 000 at the 2025 December Online Sale.

Diogenes’ five time G1 winning sire Hawwaam enjoyed a good double at the Vaal recently, where his promising daughter Grand Hawaii won the first race and his smart son Pivotal Role landed race nine.
The half-brother to Horse Of The Year Rainbow Bridge and dual G1 winner Golden Ducat has 16 lots on offer at the National Yearling Sale.
