Weekend double for Hawwaam

Wilgerbosdrift’s exciting homebred stallion Hawwaam came up with two eye catching winners this weekend.
On Friday, Hawwaam’s classy three-year-old daughter Obsidian Star downed some smart rivals when she won the Racehorse Owners Association Plate (1400m).

Under a well judged ride from Chase Maujean, the Sharon Kotzen trained Obsidian Star hit the front 200m from home and kept galloping well to hold off last season’s Listed Champion Juvenile Cup winner Gimmethatworldcup by a neck.

Bred by Volmoed Stud, Obsidian Star is owned by Messrs K Jukhoop, M Christmas, Vikash Kandoo, G M Kotzen, B S Tobias & SA Punters Forum Syndicate (Pty) Ltd.

The classy filly, who is out of the National Emblem mare Eternal Sunshine, has won four of just six starts, with Obsidian Star having finished second, behind subsequent G2 Douglas Whyte Thekwini Stakes winner Marchland, in last season’s Listed Lady’s Slipper Stakes.

Obsidian Star was a R300 000 buy from the 2025 National Yearling Sale.

Hawwaam looks to have another exciting three-year-old this season in the form of Fierceness.
The latter made it two wins, from just three starts, when winning at Turffontein on Saturday.

Under Muzi Yeni, the Mike and Mathew De Kock trained gelding dug down deep to land the Gage Car Hire MR 86 Handicap by a neck.
An impressive winner on debut before finishing second, on his only other start, Fierceness was bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein.

Bred on similar lines to July winning champion Sparkling Water, Saturday’s winner races for TKP Racing, Messrs D Chinsammy, E Naicker, Y Naidoo, P M Murugasa & K M Chetty.

Fierceness, who is out of the Soft Falling Rain mare Gin Fizz, was a R1 300 000 buy from the 2025 National Yearling Sale.
